“…an example of what an institution like Florida A & M University and the Marching 100 can produce! A hunger for music and love and with steeled determination, Chapman Sweet, Jr. is a man on a mission to reach his goals and is willing to go to the ends of the earth and risk life for it. “One Week Gig”
is authentic, humorous, and heart wrenching. Seen
from a voyeur's point of view, this is a story of the trials and tribulations that can occur in some marriages."

“Rufus Curry uses words as an artist uses paint on a canvas. Through his words, it is possible to "see" his characters and their surroundings. One Week Gig explores the marriage relationship, individual dreams and God-given talent. Chapman Sweet steps out in faith and finds God's plan and purpose for his life."

"This you know: men speak in bullet statements and women speak in fine print. Women’s romance novels focus on relationships and men’s novels focus on action and accomplishment. This is a most unusual book because it narrates relationships from a man’s perspective. And this is no wimpy man but one who feels heartache, disappointment, joy, and takes risks. The central characters are so well developed that two Gig readers could discuss the characters like discussing family. Women who want to know what goes on in the male mind should definitely read this book. The active story line carries male readers through the narrative. Besides hungering for the sequel after finishing this book, the reader will be challenged and empowered to examine his or her relationship and those dormant, sublimated dreams and ambitions that most of us are not courageous enough to revisit."

"Oh my God! Being an avid reader, I thoroughly enjoyed One Week Gig. I absolutely love Chapman Sweet Jr. I laughed with him and cried with him. The story kept my interest at all times. The characters were not shallow and I could relate to them or know of people like them. It was refreshing reading from a male perspective and having the male displayed in a positive light. Being a resident of Fort Lauderdale, I love the references to local places I am familiar with. I will be telling all my friends about this book and encouraging them to purchase it!
Let me know when I can get my hands on the next book! I'm your new number one fan!"

"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were very relevant and relatable. I believe that anyone who has been married any significant amount of time can relate to the dynamics of Chapman and Terri's marriage. The book draws your attention from the very beginning and begs you to keep reading to find out what happens in the end. It was especially refreshing to see this story from a male point of view. "The story of Chapman Sweet and his challenges to pursue his dreams and maintain, save, or dissolve his troubled marriage is one that will resonate with any reader. I enjoyed the voice of the main character, his humor and senstivity helping to draw him as a realistic, sympathetic protagonist. The writing was captiviting, the dialogue was snappy, funny, and touching, and the story was completely engaging. The reader couldn't help but root for Chapman to reach his goals.
While I didn't like his wife at all--I have a problem with selfish women who have plenty but can never have enough--I empathized with several of feelings she was meant to convey. That whole timeline that we women tend to attach to ourselves, and our tendencies to arrange our priorities according to our ambitions...yeah, I get that. But Terry just never came across as genuine to me, even when she supposedly had her change of heart and recognized what she had. But eh. That's real life, and the world is full of women like Terry, and men like Chapman who love them.
I especially enjoyed the references to real places and real people because it made the story seem more authentic. The supporting characters were very entertaining as well, and I found them to be very realistic depictions.
The only minor distraction was when some parts of the story occasionally switched from a first-person to a third person narrative and back again. But again, that was very minor, and a very sweet story of a man trying to take a small bite out of life and still do right by those he loves managed to shine through. This is a very good story with a very good guy, and that's always a welcome and refreshing read. The reader can't help but want him to succeed.
Rufus Curry Jr. is a very talented writer. I look forward to reading more from him."
